Post Modern, 1980-Present

Postmodernism was the relevant era from the 1980 to present. Post modern art rejects the use of abstraction. They were forward thinkers and had a lot of technological influences in this time as well. Installation art and performance art slowly began to be a popular form of art as well as Graffiti art and environmental art.

Installation Art is an art that an artist has designed or created for a certain area or location. Typically, they are created for public enjoyment and put into public places, but not always. Sometimes, unfortunately it has happened, but artist have created masterpieces and they are actually not permitted in the area or they are not permanent.

This sculpture was created by Cai Guo-Qiang in 2006. It was called “head on”. This sculpture is a life size replica of 99 wolves in a glass wall. The wolves are to represent the historical issues that have been between West and East Germany. The wolves were created in Quanzhou touwn in Fujian Province.  This also happens to be the artist native town. This sculpture makes the wolves seem as if they are in constant motion.

Performance Art is primarily dominated by women, there are some men in the performance industry as well though. Tania Bruguera was a performing artist that had her break in 2009, in the show of “Tatlin’s Whisper #6” which also happens to be the Havana Version. This theatrical performance was when the audience members were able to freely have the opportunities to speak for a whole minute and then being escorted offstage by actors in military uniforms. You can see in the photo that the stage was very small and personal. The color of the curtain did not take a way from the person who would stand behind the podium. Bruguera’s early works focused on her own body trying to focus on paying tribute and bringing recognition to the fellow Cuban artist of Mendieta.

This picture is a photo of the stage where Bruguera had her big break with the play.

Graffiti Art is when artist, can be street artist, paint or spray paint a mural on the wall for all others to see. Graffiti artist can be more then one person when it comes to certain styles or murals. Katsu is a popular graffiti artist that is located in New York City. He uses technology and public intervention to comment on commercialism, privacy, and even digital culture. Because of the technology and the up to date resources that are able to be used, Katsu’s work tends to be huge in digital media, conceptual artwork, and sometimes traditional graffiti. The following picture is when Katsu actually had the resources available to use a drone that had to ability to use spray cans to do the graffiti art. This finishing project was done on April 2017 in New York City. You can see the colors, how they distinguish between each other and even though the object being used was in motion, you can clearly see the lines in the artwork.

Environmental Art is similar to installation art, however, sometimes it is not designed for a specific place and it is not built to last. Sometimes they are created for outdoor locations. They typically make money due to photos of their work instead of people actually going to see their work. Rachel Sussman has spent over a decade capturing the images of the oldest things that she can find living on the earth. She takes the photos to try to forge a personal connection to others over time of the oldest things living in the world. One of her famous works includes, “Old Tjikko” which was a 9,558-year-old Norway Spruce located in Sweden, in June 2014.You can see in the photo of the background which brings more awareness to the tree in the photo of the surroundings.
